Profile

School:
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign: via the interweb (LEEP)
Expected graduation:
December 2007
Employer:
Worthington Public Libraries
Favorite class:
Definitely the one that took me to England-- LIS 580/587 through the University of Southern Mississippi
Dream Job:
hybrid-job in a public library of Adult Reference/Teen librarian. I love reference, I love teen lit. I also love teen programming. And then there's the appeal of archival/preservation work...I can't choose!!! I won't be picky. Someone give me a job and I guarantee enthusiasm...
Tell us something about yourself:
I live in Ohio. I love Big Ten football, learning, my job, talking about nerdy things, making child-like crafts, hanging out with my family (when they're all around) and enjoying adult beverages on warm sunlit patios.
Any other degrees?
B.A. in English from THE Ohio State University
Why did you choose library science?
After working in advertising for the newspaper industry for 5 years after undergrad, I finally found my calling. My childhood best friend convinced me to apply to library school when we were having a few beers at a pub. I told her about all of the things I loved about life (music, books, old books, writing, learning) and they just happened to be what SHE did for a living. She's a Librarian. I owe her my happiness because I finally feel like I FIT somewhere.

I'm still here...

But barely. I realize I haven't posted in....forever, prior to leaving for my month-long study abroad trip to England I think. Wow. Sadly Ning has become more of a back-burner social networking site for me....among the ranks of facebook to me-- something I browse occasionally, and touch base every so often. I'm an avid myspacer though-- not entirely proud of that fact, it's just worked into my day like checking email. But I digress.

Well the big graduation date is December. I can't bel…

I'm still a student, right?

So this summer has already been a whirlwind, and it's about to get windier. (Is that a word?)

We've got a bunch of librarian openings at our library, which means I've been working extra hours. I've also been the lucky one to become the Children's alternate associate, which means I spend an awful lot of my time at the children's desk these days. I love it and it's great- but it is so exhausting when I get home. I had no idea that summer would be like this. Between SRP decorating, progra…

Commence tooting horns....

I've been holding this in for about a month now. But......

The Library that I work for and love with all of my heart won Thomson Gale and Library Journal's

2007 Library of the Year Award!!!!

I've had such a hard time harboring that secret from all of my library student friends! I'm terrible at keeping secrets!

Anyways, to find out more, pick up the 6/15/07 edition of Library Journal (great pictures in the print edition) or you can read the article online:

portfolio and questions

So now that school's "out" for summer....well actually until June11th, I started working on my portfolio. I'm using SeaMonkey to put it together- and I use updated web browsers, so when I'm working on it from home, well it looks fantastic.

Then I get to work and start looking at it and it looks like crap. This is because the fancy Futura Hv font I use doesn't show up in old IE browsers. I know I'll probably end up switching over to a new (not so fancy..booooo) font, but it's frustratin…

My first angry letter against censorship

I've been addicted to Brotherhood 2.0-- this YA author (John Green) started communicating with his brother (Hank Green) via weblog, and they've agreed to keep doing it for a year. It's hilarious, and I highly recommend wasting hours of watching 3 minute videos on their blog. http://www.brotherhood2.com

Anyways, John got the email addresses and contact information for the people in Bartlesville, OK who have decided to ban… Continue

I am taking LIS458LE this summer. And other classes in the fall...
But this reponse is not threaded for others to see. So to explain, iIt was in reference to a question about whether I was taking any classes this summer. But that is pretty much self-evident.

Thanks, Mandy. I had seen the LJ article but had barely skimmed it. That is much closer to what I think is *part* of the answer.

But, really, if I had it all to do over again, I'd just point at the things Jennifer wrote about it and say, "What she said!" Oh yeah, that's what started it.... :(

One of the sad parts is that some people came off thinking that I disagreed with Ryan, or that I think it's OK to routinely say "No," and that's just crap. Oh well.

I asked Jill & Matt about WebFTP, etc. and Jill said you had wrote in. Glad to hear it. It sounds like I was correct about what I thought was supposed to happen; just that it hasn't yet. All of our stuff is supposed to automagicallly moved to WebDAV some day and then we'll be able to just SFTP in and grab it all at once or put stuff in wholesale, etc. Once they make the move, feel free to ask me about the "easier process." :)

Congrats on finishing up in December. I plan to graduate from SJSU in December also. I'm doing an internship this summer with a librarian who also graduated from Urbana-champaign. When you are finished, is it an MS that you get or an MLS?

I was in the middle of watching a movie when I remembered that I hadn't bought my NYC tickets yet. I purchased them. Jet Blue, because I like clots. Anyway, I decided to check my email. Now I'm sitting here on a Friday night just after midnight joining yet another social something something. You are extremely persuasive.
