Expected graduation:
May 13, 2007!
Employer:
Goddard College, Eliot D. Pratt Library
Favorite class:
Cataloging & Classification I & II
Dream Job:
Anything that requires me to have my hands in all the cookie jars. A little reference, a lot of cataloging, some web design. I would like something that allows me to do both print and free web collection development. I would like to know my patrons, so some place small and intimate, that can take it when I speak my mind and is not afraid to let me experiment a little (or a lot!). I need a place that will support the fact that I'm an activist in my field and in my life. Hmmm...am I asking too much

Update: Wow...I totally got this job!
Tell us something about yourself:
When I'm under a lot of stress (approaching the nervous breakdown point), I have nightmares about my cats getting out of the house, getting hurt, and then me not being able to round them up. In this, my last semester, I've been having a lot of cat escape dreams. So there's something...I'm a crazy cat lady.

I also love bugs...LOVE THEM. Except wasps, hornets, bees...you get the idea. I'm thinking of hypnotherapy to break me of this fear, does anyone have anything to say about the success of something like this? No, really, I'm not kidding, I'm annoying the crap out of myself.

I also love the color brown, the word socks, and my sawzall!
Any other degrees?
BA in Creative Non-Fiction Writing, also know as personal essay & memoir, from the New School.
Why did you choose library science?
Because the realist in me had already been working in libraries since I was a freshman in undergrad and knew that I was well suited to the work, enjoyed it, and if I played my cards right, could probably buy a house some day and pay off all those pesky student loans. The idealist in me thought that this might be the only career in the world where I could combine my organizational OCD with my activism. Seriously, I still can't think of a career that would encourage me to be an activist through my work like this one, unless, of course, it's career activism, which totally wastes my type-a skills.

Job Prep Reading List

Hi all!

I got a job! Yay! I am going to be the Library Systems & Technical Services Coordinator for Goddard College up here in VT.

Of course, in all the scramble to get a job and stay afloat after getting my degree, I have sort of fallen behind in what's happening in the world, LIS or otherwise.

But let's just worry about LIS. Anybody read anything good, heard anything astounding, want to share anything relevant to my new job to get me in the mood.

Thank… Continue

Hi Helen! One of my classmates just did a presentation on Creative Non-Fiction. Now, all I want to do is sit around and read all summer. I think it is way cool.

I have cat escape nightmares too. I wonder "what if there's a fire?" "Where will they go?" One of my cats in particular would NOT do well outdoors. she's a wuss.

No, despite my mother's pleas and my sister's lack of pity--they both live in Falls Church, VA--I'm not going to Annual.

I'm going to NASIG in very early June and ASIST in Oct. Can't afford any more than those.

Most definitely! I'll be the one in the third row crying.

OK, just kidding about the crying and 3rd row, but I intend to be at graduation. I'd like to see it from the "other side" this time.
