Ouch.

I just got my first rejection notice from a job application. I really didn't think I would be cut on the first round. My cover letter is pretty good, but I don't have a whole lot of experience. So, this job hunting business might be a bit more tricky than I supposed. Some people think it might be the school I am attending, but I didn't think that only people who attend the top schools get jobs. Am I out of touch?

The Bridge

I have been busy this month with summer school. The School Media and Materials for Children classes have consumed a lot of my time and many of my thoughts. In grad school, I have focused on instruction and marketing / outreach. But time and again, I find myself researching school libraries. There seems to be a divide between academic and school libraries, as if two separate species use these facilities. Students who graduate high school in May will become college freshmen only three months later… Continue

ALA Tips

I made it through my first ALA with only a few snags. Here are my tips for any future big conferences:

Wear sensible shoes, no matter how dowdy they look. I was a fool and decided to wear attractive footwear. BIG HUGE mistake. Blisters everywhere. Much pain.

Seek out inexpensive restaurants that will feed you vegetables. We frequented the Saints Paradise Church Cafeteria near the Convention Center. Nice folks. Good eats.

Plan a LOT before you leave. It made a big diffe… Continue

Summer Lovin'

It's more like -- I'm lovin' summer. Sleeping late and staying up late. Movies, friends, sewing. . .

Graduate school really took away a huge chunk of my life, and I didn't really realize it until now. I have arranged to take a couple of summer classes, but they only last one month. Then, I will take three classes in the fall and GRADUATE in December.

I am leaving in about two weeks for ALA, and I would really like to meet up with any of you who are going. I will post something… Continue

LOEX

Wow. San Diego is wonderful! I had a great time at the conference. Southern California librarians got CLASS.

There were so many informative sessions; so many smart folks attended. Above all, it really struck me how much the librarians cared about their job and students and learning.

Dr. Pat Wolfe was the keynote, and although she said she had never spoken to librarians before, she hit the sweet spot. She discussed the latest brain research… Continue

Posters are almost finished. . .

Well, I didn't know how to do a poster for a poster session. So, I did my own thing. I have a couple more to go, but the big stuff is finished.

And it all makes no SENSE right now! Aieeeeeeeeee! But, they are pretty.

Paper. Completed.

Yay! Google Books did not destroy me. I actually used the phrase "cabana boy" on page 12. At least there WAS a page 12. I enjoy writing, especially the research part, but it's not what I want to do forever. When I think of a tenure-track job, I shiver. Doing the actual job would be enough. Publishing pressure is hell. I am feeling it, even now. But I don't have time to edit a paper and get it submitted anywhere.

Maybe this summer. Yeah. With a six year old and husband running around. Ri… Continue

Google me Crazy

I. Can't. Read. Any. More. About. Google.

It is paper time, and I have one due on Wednesday. It is named, "Google Book Project and Undergraduate Information Literacy: or Why I am Somewhat Totally Out of My Mind." Of course, the GBP hasn't been around long enough to have any real affect on IL, so the paper is partly a thought piece. It is driving me nuts. Maybe it is just the fact that spring is all around and I would rather be doing NOTHING. Maybe it is the fifteen mill… Continue
