Hello, everyone! I'm a student at Dominican University where I'm
enrolled in a class exploring Library 2.0. We are working on a project
to gather images of how library as a place is changing in the face of
Library 2.0. I have started a flickr group called
Show us your Library 2.0!
to try and bring together images of some of these changes. Follow the
link and have a look. Feel free to join and pass it along to your
friends, fellow libraria…

My first library job! I did volunteer in my daughter's school library last year and shelved books and helped prepare new books for shelving. I actually found the library job through my school's career center website. I can honestly say that I have NEVER been interested in working in this field and I hope that it's okay. I just want to gain practical experience and learn as much as I can. The librarian there is super nice, easygoing, laid back, flexible, and is willing to let me do… Continue

But barely. I realize I haven't posted in....forever, prior to leaving for my month-long study abroad trip to England I think. Wow. Sadly Ning has become more of a back-burner social networking site for me....among the ranks of facebook to me-- something I browse occasionally, and touch base every so often. I'm an avid myspacer though-- not entirely proud of that fact, it's just worked into my day like checking email. But I digress.
Well the big graduation date is December. I can't bel…

Hi all!
I got a job! Yay! I am going to be the Library Systems & Technical Services Coordinator for Goddard College up here in VT.
Of course, in all the scramble to get a job and stay afloat after getting my degree, I have sort of fallen behind in what's happening in the world, LIS or otherwise.
But let's just worry about LIS. Anybody read anything good, heard anything astounding, want to share anything relevant to my new job to get me in the mood.
Thank…

I just got my first rejection notice from a job application. I really didn't think I would be cut on the first round. My cover letter is pretty good, but I don't have a whole lot of experience. So, this job hunting business might be a bit more tricky than I supposed. Some people think it might be the school I am attending, but I didn't think that only people who attend the top schools get jobs. Am I out of touch?

I have been busy this month with summer school. The School Media and Materials for Children classes have consumed a lot of my time and many of my thoughts. In grad school, I have focused on instruction and marketing / outreach. But time and again, I find myself researching school libraries. There seems to be a divide between academic and school libraries, as if two separate species use these facilities. Students who graduate high school in May will become college freshmen only three months later…

(I have made a similar cross-post on my
Library2.0 blog.)
First of all, I'm happy to announce that I have just been named Proofreader for the Library Student Journal. Hooray!
More importantly, the LSJ is an Open Access Publishing venture, which means that it's free to read, use, and publish in as though it were a subscription journal. The journal is free because its cost is covered by donations, and its labor done by volun…

I made it through my first ALA with only a few snags. Here are my tips for any future big conferences:
Wear sensible shoes, no matter how dowdy they look. I was a fool and decided to wear attractive footwear. BIG HUGE mistake. Blisters everywhere. Much pain.
Seek out inexpensive restaurants that will feed you vegetables. We frequented the Saints Paradise Church Cafeteria near the Convention Center. Nice folks. Good eats.
Plan a LOT before you leave. It made a big diffe…

So this summer has already been a whirlwind, and it's about to get windier. (Is that a word?)
We've got a bunch of librarian openings at our library, which means I've been working extra hours. I've also been the lucky one to become the Children's alternate associate, which means I spend an awful lot of my time at the children's desk these days. I love it and it's great- but it is so exhausting when I get home. I had no idea that summer would be like this. Between SRP decorating, progra…

I've been holding this in for about a month now. But......
The Library that I work for and love with all of my heart won Thomson Gale and Library Journal's
2007 Library of the Year Award!!!!
I've had such a hard time harboring that secret from all of my library student friends! I'm terrible at keeping secrets!
Anyways, to find out more, pick up the 6/15/07 edition of Library Journal (great pictures in the print edition) or you can read the article online:

I'm in the Community Informatics Corps at UIUC GSLIS. I take classes at the Puerto Rican Cultural Center (PRCC) in the Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago because UIUC has a partnership with the center. UIUC students work with PRCC staff and volunteers on various projects related to LIS generally and community information systems more specifically. So, for example, over the last year UIUC students have been a part of the development of curriculum at Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos High School (an a…

It's more like -- I'm lovin' summer. Sleeping late and staying up late. Movies, friends, sewing. . .
Graduate school really took away a huge chunk of my life, and I didn't really realize it until now. I have arranged to take a couple of summer classes, but they only last one month. Then, I will take three classes in the fall and GRADUATE in December.
I am leaving in about two weeks for ALA, and I would really like to meet up with any of you who are going. I will post something…

Since this is a student community, I thought I'd share. I received A's in both of my classes this past semester... which means I am still on the Dean's List. Hooray! I had a tech services class and a class about being a media center librarian. Now I am just waiting to hear back from the University I am TRYING to transfer to, to see if they have received all of my transcripts yet. I'm not sure why they are having such difficulty in getting them. It's rather frustrating on my end, that's for sure.

I finally found the name of the band and song in one of my favorite Geico commercials.
The band is Royksopp, a Norwegian electronica band and the song name is "Remind Me."
Here is a clip of their video from YouTube...

So now that school's "out" for summer....well actually until June11th, I started working on my portfolio. I'm using SeaMonkey to put it together- and I use updated web browsers, so when I'm working on it from home, well it looks fantastic.
Then I get to work and start looking at it and it looks like crap. This is because the fancy Futura Hv font I use doesn't show up in old IE browsers. I know I'll probably end up switching over to a new (not so fancy..booooo) font, but it's frustratin…

Wow. San Diego is wonderful! I had a great time at the conference. Southern California librarians got CLASS.
There were so many informative sessions; so many smart folks attended. Above all, it really struck me how much the librarians cared about their job and students and learning.
Dr. Pat Wolfe was the keynote, and although she said she had never spoken to librarians before, she hit the sweet spot. She discussed the latest brain research…

I've been addicted to Brotherhood 2.0-- this YA author (John Green) started communicating with his brother (Hank Green) via weblog, and they've agreed to keep doing it for a year. It's hilarious, and I highly recommend wasting hours of watching 3 minute videos on their blog. http://www.brotherhood2.com
Anyways, John got the email addresses and contact information for the people in
Bartlesville, OK who have decided to ban…

I figured I'd begin by attempting to explain the [dang, what is it called] thing on my profile page that is the same as the title of this post. My first blog was called
...the thoughts are broken..., before I got my own domain last July. It was live until just a few weeks ago when my TypePad account ran out. It has now gone to the big bit b…

Hi, I'm a part-time library student, while I work full-time as a web
developer by day. I live in rural Ontario with my wife and two teens.
Very interested in the Library 2.0 trend, but also think it is very
important for libraries to stay rooted in the essentials -- books,
physical libraries, and local communities. I blog at:

I have created Google Homepages for my mom and my dad. Providing tech support via telephone, my mom (who recently learned how to include attachments to email) now has a personalized Google homepage, complete with cat pictures of the day, the weather at home and where she typically vacations, etc.
Okay- yes I'm procrastinating again. I HAVE to work on this final assignment for my Preservation class today- it's my day off. But, when one wakes up at 6am on a Saturday, wha…

I know this is going to sound nutty, but for the past couple of weeks I'd been getting overwhelmed over the amount of information that's out there- that I want to read- and keep up with...and trying to figure out HOW to keep myself updated.
So I started with a del.icio.us account--a quick fix-- because I have a bad habit of Adding Favorites at home, then not being able to access them at work. So I did it. Eh....it's alright. I don't particularly like the way it's set up and there has t…

Yay! Google Books did not destroy me. I actually used the phrase "cabana boy" on page 12. At least there WAS a page 12. I enjoy writing, especially the research part, but it's not what I want to do forever. When I think of a tenure-track job, I shiver. Doing the actual job would be enough. Publishing pressure is hell. I am feeling it, even now. But I don't have time to edit a paper and get it submitted anywhere.
Maybe this summer. Yeah. With a six year old and husband running around. Ri…

I. Can't. Read. Any. More. About. Google.
It is paper time, and I have one due on Wednesday. It is named, "Google Book Project and Undergraduate Information Literacy: or Why I am
Somewhat Totally Out of My Mind." Of course, the GBP hasn't been around long enough to have any real affect on IL, so the paper is partly a thought piece. It is driving me nuts. Maybe it is just the fact that spring is all around and I would rather be doing NOTHING. Maybe it is the fifteen mill…

I joined ALA, PLA, NCLA...so now what?
Everyone encouraged me to join professional organizations because they'll look good on the resume. Aside from that reason and looking forward to my first (and potentially only) annual ALA conference, I have no clue as to what I should be doing with my membership to these organizations.
How does one start? Why do I have to pay for the ALA New Members Round Table in an organization that is so vast and sprawling? Where can I find guidance?…
