I just got my first rejection notice from a job application. I really didn't think I would be cut on the first round. My cover letter is pretty good, but I don't have a whole lot of experience. So, this job hunting business might be a bit more tricky than I supposed. Some people think it might be the school I am attending, but I didn't think that only people who attend the top schools get jobs. Am I out of touch?

I have been busy this month with summer school. The School Media and Materials for Children classes have consumed a lot of my time and many of my thoughts. In grad school, I have focused on instruction and marketing / outreach. But time and again, I find myself researching school libraries. There seems to be a divide between academic and school libraries, as if two separate species use these facilities. Students who graduate high school in May will become college freshmen only three months later…

I made it through my first ALA with only a few snags. Here are my tips for any future big conferences:
Wear sensible shoes, no matter how dowdy they look. I was a fool and decided to wear attractive footwear. BIG HUGE mistake. Blisters everywhere. Much pain.
Seek out inexpensive restaurants that will feed you vegetables. We frequented the Saints Paradise Church Cafeteria near the Convention Center. Nice folks. Good eats.

It's more like -- I'm lovin' summer. Sleeping late and staying up late. Movies, friends, sewing. . .
Graduate school really took away a huge chunk of my life, and I didn't really realize it until now. I have arranged to take a couple of summer classes, but they only last one month. Then, I will take three classes in the fall and GRADUATE in December.
I am leaving in about two weeks for ALA, and I would really like to meet up with any of you who are going. I will post something…

Wow. San Diego is wonderful! I had a great time at the conference. Southern California librarians got CLASS.
There were so many informative sessions; so many smart folks attended. Above all, it really struck me how much the librarians cared about their job and students and learning.
Dr. Pat Wolfe was the keynote, and although she said she had never spoken to librarians before, she hit the sweet spot. She discussed the latest brain research…
