Hi Kris,
I'm at SJSU too, in my second semester. Looks like you're finishing up the program. I've just started looking for a p/t library related job, not being picky, just to start getting some experience and am finding that wonderful catch-22: you need experience to get a job but you need a job to get experience. Would love to "chat" about SJSU. Oh, and congrats on the wedding!
Yeah, I'm pretty busy working toward the "prize" also. I'm also getting married right after graduation, so it's been hectic planning everything and trying to finish grad school. Yes, there seems to be a lot of bilingual and children's services librarian positions available. During one conference a year ago I learned that children's services is generally an area in libraries where they are always short. At Oakland Public where I work we have actually had all the same staff for the past year, but prior to that for 3 years, there always seemed to be a children's librarian position opened. I work in children's services and hope to stay in the same field. I like the idea of also working with teens and adults too, so I think ideally if I can work at a branch library and maybe specialize in children's, but help do reference for all ages, that would be awesome. Our degree is an MLIS. good luck!
By the way, I've noticed several job openings in CA-- is there a shortage out there? There seem to be more openings out there (particularly for bilingual and/or children's services librarians). I am keeping my eye on anything with warmer weather than Ohio, which leaves a LARGE portion of the country..but I've never been to CA.
Thanks for the congrats! I'm so focused on the "prize" that it's hard to accept any congratulations yet. I know it'll fly by, but I feel like I still have quite a ways when I'm finished. I'm getting an MS-- you?
Outreach Librarian or Reference Librarian - I currently work in children's services as a library assistant, where I run a preschool story time program. Before that I helped run a tutoring and homework help program. If I could incorporate these skills by continuing to do outreach to the community, but still have the opportunity to do story times at the library and do reference, that would be great!
Tell us something about yourself:
Before I started Library School I was teaching yoga and doing massage. I still enjoy both yoga and massage and hope to continue with these as I start my career as a Librarian.
Any other degrees?
BA Journalism; Certified Massage Therapist and Yoga Teacher
Why did you choose library science?
I was considering a career as a teacher or social worker. When I started working for the Oakland Public Library, I found my calling and it seemed to fulfill both teaching/social work interests. Reaching out to the community, doing programs, and helping find the answers, I think is a great way to give back, and also feel enriched. Plus I enjoy books!
