Is anyone out there beginning to apply for jobs? If so, would you be willing to jot down a brief description of the process / your experience / reflections? C'mon -- we'd do it for you. . .
When I was in San Diego, someone told me that there were a lot of librarians retiring out there. But that was just what they said. I don't know if job openings are actually there at all.
Thanks for sharing, and no, you do not sound callous. High school students are some of the worst! Only fools tread there (like me!)
What a question! Hmmm. My friends would probably change that I live too far away from them.
One question I've heard of is this: What is the last mathematical formula you have used?
Most people freeze because they are thinking about calculus. The interviewer is simply wanting some simple answer like, 'Yesterday I figured out what the tax would be on a pair of pants.'
It's weird to heard people talking about a lack of jobs, because honestly that's not the outlook I have living in the midwest. I don't know if that's because the head of the Omaha part of my program knows everyone in 5 states and WILL find you a job if you're good, or if there is simply a higher job to seeker ratio. I'm not saying I expect to find a job right away, but from the recent grads around here I've talked to, it's just not much of an issue.
The salary thing is also a weird issue because $35,000-$40,000 is a lot of money here. To give some perspective, my house was $80,000.
I guess I'm saying "hey everyone, move to the midwest!" (I know most people would rather shoot themselves in the foot first, though. I certainly wouldn't be here if my family wasn't.)
I kinda hope to find a job in Oregon someday, but those jobs are going to be REALLY hard to come by for quite a while. I'll also be looking in the southwest and California (I'm from California, and wouldn't mind going back.) I've got a while, though. I keep seeing these awesome positions advertised, and I sure hope they're still around when I graduate.
