LIS Students

Students in Library and Information Science (and recent grads and friends)

I noticed in one of the blog posts by a UIUC student that motivated the creation of this site that a wish for an LIS wiki was made. Of course, there already exists an unofficial one at UIUC, run by students, not hosted on campus, and which I thought (incorrectly, obviously) had been advertised and promoted to students to use for just such a purpose (comparing notes on classes, talking about issues regarding the school, a repository for general information about the department, etc.). Given that this student obviously didn't know about this resource, yet wanted to, I figured I'd start a thread here where we all can post the extant unofficial LIS resources we know about.

First resource: the unofficial GSLIS wiki:

http://gslis.org/

Aimed at prospective, new, and current students at UIUC's GSLIS, it is intended to be a repository of all the informal knowledge in the department that has no other home, and to be a place for people to discuss things, comment on classes and other aspects of the department and the town, and generally experiment with the uses of wiki technology for supporting student life. While customized for UIUC's GSLIS, I see no reasons why it cannot be used for more general purposes as well. Pages that might be of interest to students in general include:

Library Afficionado Page for library and librarian themed things.

Cool Things on the Web which hasn't been updated recently, but still might be interesting:

LIS Mailing Lists which has some of the important ones, but could use more:

LIS Conferences, again, could use more:

A second resource for UIUC GSLIS is the social list Drinking GSLIS (drinking_gslis@yahoogroups.com) mailing list. Despite it's name, it is not just for drinking (one account states that the "drinking" originally referred to drinking coffee because there is a nearby coffee shop where the founders used to gather after 501, one of our introductory required classes). Rather, it is a social list for advertising events, jobs, news, links, apartments, asking questions about local services (e.g., mechanics, eye care, etc.), and for new students to find roommates or ask questions about our experiences in Urbana Champaign or at GSLIS. Many informal discussions have happened on this list, so its history may be useful for reference. It is a moderated list, so you'll need to email one of the moderators to join. Since the moderators keep changing, here's the page on the unofficial GSLIS wiki which should list the current moderators:

Apologies if this is redundant, I just sent these resources to an LIS newbie (starting this fall) to get her jumpstarted....

General

http://directory.google.com/Top/Reference/Libraries/Library_and_Inf...
AWESOME awesome google directory of things for library and information science. Very cool starting point.

Katie Dunneback created this site. She's a LEEP grad and has been writing her own books, working as a librarian, etc. for a few years. Her resources are pretty good- I like her perspective on a lot of things. There was a three page long interview with her in the book The NextGen Librarian's Survival Guide.

Fun

This chick is hilarious...though I think she's a little controversial. I like reading her blogs because she tags so many other interesting things-- including on the side under Links Du Jour and also Blogs she likes to follow.

http://libraryjuicepress.com/blog/
This is a blog that links the censorship/political parts of librarianship and legislation/civil rights together. Interesting- mostly far left ACLU stuff but they comment on other stuff as well...

Reviews, etc.

Horn Book Editor, Roger Sutton, has a blog- also links to all of his stuff.

Kate McDowell, my Children's Literature professor at UIUC has a blog..she reviews children's books every once in a while. She's excellent. I think she works at the Center for Chidren's Books-- who prints the Bulletin for the CCB. The CCB is uber-cool.
